Ai? Cái gì? Ở đâu? — Basic question words
Ask who, what and where without rearranging the whole Vietnamese sentence the way English often does.
What you will learn
Vietnamese question words are often easier than English question structures because the question word can stay in the same place where the missing information belongs. This lesson focuses on three essential words: ai, gì and đâu.
1. Ai? — who?
- Đây là ai? — Who is this?
- Ai ở đây? — Who is here?
- Anh gặp ai? — Who did/do you meet?
- Ai gọi em? — Who called/is calling you?
Notice that ai appears where the unknown person belongs.
2. Gì? — what?
- Đây là gì? — What is this?
- Anh ăn gì? — What do you eat / What are you eating?
- Chị uống gì? — What are you drinking / What would you like to drink?
- Em cần gì? — What do you need?
Vietnamese does not need an English-style auxiliary such as “do” here.
3. Cái gì? — what thing?
Gì is the general question word “what”. Cái gì explicitly asks about a thing/object.
- Cái gì ở trên bàn? — What is on the table?
- Đây là cái gì? — What is this thing?
Do not assume that every English “what” must become cái gì. Often gì alone is natural.
4. Đâu? — where?
- Nhà vệ sinh ở đâu? — Where is the restroom?
- Anh sống ở đâu? — Where do you live?
- Em đi đâu? — Where are you going?
- Quê chị ở đâu? — Where is your hometown?
5. The question word often stays in place
Compare:
- Anh ăn cơm. — You eat rice/a meal.
- Anh ăn gì? — You eat what?
The Vietnamese sentence keeps its basic order. The unknown information is simply replaced by gì.
This is a useful habit: build the Vietnamese sentence first, then replace the missing piece with the appropriate question word.
6. A short conversation
Lan: Anh đi đâu?
Minh: Anh đi siêu thị.
Lan: Anh mua gì?
Minh: Anh mua cà phê.
Lan: Đi với ai?
Minh: Đi với Nam.
7. Very short questions are normal
In context, Vietnamese may use:
- Ai?
- Gì?
- Ở đâu?
- Với ai?
These can be complete conversational turns because the missing information is already understood.
8. Useful vocabulary
- ai — who
- gì — what
- cái gì — what thing
- đâu — where
- với — with
- gặp — meet
- gọi — call
- mua — buy
- cần — need
9. Vietnam in real life
Natural Vietnamese often shortens questions aggressively when the situation is obvious. A parent, friend or coworker may simply ask Đi đâu? rather than a longer sentence. This is not necessarily rude; tone and relationship determine the effect.
10. Common beginner mistake
Do not rearrange Vietnamese automatically to imitate English question order. In many basic questions, the question word stays where the answer would normally appear.
Try it
- Ask “Who is this?”
- Ask “What are you drinking?” using chị.
- Ask “Where are you going?”
- Turn Anh mua cà phê into a question about the thing being bought.
Quick recap
Ai asks about people, gì asks about things/ideas, and đâu asks about place. Vietnamese often leaves the question word in the normal position of the missing information.
