Gần, xa, trước, sau, bên cạnh — Locating things relative to each other
Go beyond basic left/right directions and describe whether a place is near, far, in front, behind or beside another landmark.
What you will learn
B63 introduced basic directions and briefly used words such as gần and xa. This lesson builds a fuller spatial system so you can locate one place relative to another.
1. Gần — near
- Nhà tôi gần chợ. — My home is near the market.
- Quán cà phê ở gần đây. — The café is near here.
- Có gần không? — Is it near?
Gần can describe a short distance without giving an exact number of meters.
2. Xa — far
- Sân bay khá xa. — The airport is fairly far.
- Có xa không? — Is it far?
- Không xa lắm. — Not very far.
Gần/xa are relative. Five kilometers may feel near by motorbike and far on foot.
3. Trước and phía trước
- Xe ở trước nhà. — The vehicle is in front of the house.
- Ngân hàng ở phía trước. — The bank is ahead/in front.
- Đứng trước cửa. — Stand in front of the door.
Trước also has time/order meanings such as “before”. In this lesson the focus is spatial.
4. Sau and phía sau
- Bãi xe ở sau tòa nhà.
- Nhà vệ sinh ở phía sau.
Sau also means “after/later” in time. Context distinguishes space from time.
5. Bên cạnh — beside / next to
- Nhà thuốc ở bên cạnh ngân hàng.
- Quán ở bên cạnh khách sạn.
You may also hear kế bên in everyday speech in many regions, especially in the South. Learn bên cạnh first because it is broadly transparent.
6. Đối diện — opposite / across from
- Bưu điện ở đối diện trường học.
- Quán nằm đối diện bệnh viện.
Đối diện is useful when two places face each other across a road or open space.
7. Ở giữa — in the middle / between
- Quán ở giữa ngân hàng và nhà thuốc.
- Ngồi ở giữa.
This gives you a useful first pattern for locating something between two reference points.
8. A short direction exchange
Khách: Anh ơi, bưu điện ở đâu?
Người địa phương: Gần đây thôi. Đi thẳng đến ngã tư. Bưu điện ở bên cạnh ngân hàng.
Khách: Có phải đối diện trường học không anh?
Người địa phương: Đúng rồi.
9. Gần đây and gần đó
- gần đây — near here; also “recently” in another context
- gần đó — near there / nearby that place
Again, the same words can develop different meanings. A location conversation makes the spatial reading clear.
10. Landmark + relation is often enough
Instead of a long formal address, someone may say:
- bên cạnh ngân hàng
- đối diện trường học
- sau chợ
When both speakers know the landmark, this can be more useful than a full address.
11. Useful vocabulary
- gần — near
- xa — far
- trước / phía trước — in front / ahead
- sau / phía sau — behind
- bên cạnh — beside/next to
- kế bên — next to, common conversational variant
- đối diện — opposite/across from
- ở giữa — in the middle/between
- mốc — marker/reference point, in some contexts
12. Vietnam in real life
Spoken directions often use landmarks because addresses can be difficult to see from the street, alleys can branch, and a well-known shop, school, bridge or intersection may be easier to recognize. Maps and addresses are useful, but landmark language remains practical.
13. Common beginner mistakes
- Assuming trước/sau only refer to time.
- Demanding an exact distance when gần/xa is enough for the speaker’s purpose.
- Thinking kế bên is wrong because a textbook teaches only bên cạnh.
- Translating every location phrase through English word order instead of learning the Vietnamese pattern.
Try it
- Say that a café is next to a bank.
- Say that a school is opposite a hospital.
- Ask whether a place is far.
- Describe one place near your home using two landmarks.
Quick recap
Use gần, xa, trước, sau, bên cạnh, đối diện, ở giữa to relate places to landmarks. Vietnamese directions often become clear through these spatial relationships rather than exact coordinates.
