Xin nói chậm lại — Asking for slower, repeated or clearer speech

Ask someone to speak more slowly or repeat naturally, distinguish slower from louder, use có thể...không? when helpful, and choose a respectful form without assuming xin is required in every request.

Beginner Unit 11 Lesson 100 of 107

What you will learn

B99 helped you identify the communication problem. B100 gives you several precise requests when the problem is speed or missed speech.

1. Nói chậm lại

Nói chậm lại means speak more slowly.

  • Anh nói chậm lại một chút được không ạ?
  • Chị nói chậm lại giúp em với ạ.

Một chút can soften the scale of the request.

2. Xin nói chậm lại

Xin nói chậm lại. is understandable and can appear in learner materials or more formal/request-like contexts.

In ordinary interaction, a relationship-based request such as Anh nói chậm lại một chút được không ạ? may sound more grounded.

Do not learn xin as mandatory before every polite request.

3. Có thể...không?

  • Anh có thể nói chậm lại không?
  • Chị có thể nói lại không ạ?

This reuses B44. It is clear and useful, but it is not the only request pattern in Vietnamese.

4. Nói lại

Nói lại means say it again/repeat.

  • Anh nói lại được không ạ?
  • Chị nói lại câu cuối giúp em với.

5. Chậm hơn

You may also hear:

Nói chậm hơn một chút nhé.

Hơn makes the comparison explicit: slower than before.

6. Slower is not louder

Compare:

  • nói chậm — speak slowly;
  • nói to — speak loudly;
  • nói nhỏ — speak quietly/softly.

If speed is the problem, asking someone to speak louder may not help.

7. One part only

  • Anh nói lại từ cuối được không?
  • Chị nói lại địa chỉ giúp em với ạ.

Ask for the smallest missing piece when possible.

8. Ask someone to write it

For an address, name or unfamiliar word:

  • Anh viết ra giúp tôi được không?
  • Chị viết từ này giúp em với ạ.

Writing can solve a listening problem quickly.

9. Spell or show

Until the Pronunciation & Reading track is complete, a learner can still ask:

Anh viết tên giúp em với.

Later Track A will teach how Vietnamese spelling maps to sound more systematically.

10. A short conversation

Nhân viên: Anh đi thẳng qua sảnh rồi rẽ vào hành lang bên phải.

Khách: Xin lỗi, chị nói chậm lại một chút được không ạ?

Nhân viên: Dạ. Đi thẳng... qua sảnh... rồi rẽ phải.

Khách: Dạ, em hiểu rồi. Cảm ơn chị.

11. People may adapt in different ways

One person may slow down. Another may repeat using different words, point, write, show a map or switch languages.

Communication success matters more than forcing one repair strategy.

12. When the other person still speaks too fast

You can repeat the request:

Chậm hơn một chút nữa được không ạ?

There is no shame in asking twice when the information matters.

13. Common beginner mistakes

  • Asking for louder speech when the problem is speed.
  • Believing xin must begin every polite request.
  • Requesting the entire sentence again when only one word is missing.
  • Pretending you understood after the speaker repeated too quickly.

Try it

  1. Ask an older woman to speak more slowly.
  2. Ask someone to repeat the final word.
  3. Ask someone to write an address for you.
  4. Explain the difference between nói chậm and nói to.

Quick recap

Nói chậm lại, nói lại, viết ra are practical repair tools. Choose the tool that matches the real problem instead of using one generic “I don’t understand” response.
