Beginner Unit 7 Lesson 59 of 107

What you will learn

Once you like an item, the next question may be Có màu khác không? — “Is there another color?” This lesson gives you practical color language without turning color vocabulary into a disconnected word list.

1. Có màu khác không?

  • Có màu khác không? — Is there another color?
  • Cái này có màu khác không?
  • Mẫu này có màu khác không? — Does this model/style come in another color?

Khác means different/other in this pattern.

2. Common colors

  • đen — black
  • trắng — white
  • đỏ — red
  • vàng — yellow/gold, depending on context
  • cam — orange
  • hồng — pink
  • tím — purple
  • nâu — brown
  • xám — gray

3. Xanh needs context

Xanh by itself can cover a blue/green range depending on the object and context. When clarity matters, Vietnamese often specifies:

  • xanh lá / xanh lá cây — green
  • xanh dương — blue
  • xanh da trời — sky blue / blue

Do not assume the English blue/green boundary maps perfectly onto the bare Vietnamese word xanh.

4. Noun + màu + color

  • áo màu đen — black shirt
  • xe màu trắng — white vehicle
  • túi màu đỏ — red bag

Màu can explicitly introduce the color.

5. Noun + color can also work

In many ordinary contexts you will also hear shorter forms:

  • áo đen
  • áo trắng
  • xe đỏ

Whether màu is needed depends on the noun, clarity and style.

6. Màu nào?

  • Em thích màu nào? — Which color do you like?
  • Anh lấy màu nào? — Which color will you take?
  • Có những màu nào? — What colors are available?

7. Còn màu đen không?

In a shop, còn often asks whether stock remains:

  • Còn màu đen không? — Is black still available?
  • Còn cỡ lớn không? — Do you still have the large size?

This is different from the còn... used to shift topic such as Còn anh? — “How about you?” Context separates the uses.

8. A short shop conversation

Khách: Chị ơi, mẫu này có màu khác không?

Người bán: Có màu đen, trắng và xanh.

Khách: Xanh dương hay xanh lá chị?

Người bán: Xanh dương em.

Khách: Cho em xem màu đen với.

9. Đậm and nhạt

  • xanh đậm — dark/deep blue or green depending on the base color
  • xanh nhạt — light/pale blue or green depending on context
  • đỏ đậm — deep/dark red
  • hồng nhạt — light pink

Đậm/nhạt modify intensity/shade rather than creating a completely new grammar pattern.

10. Color names change with fashion and commerce

Modern shops may use names such as be, kem, navy or branded shade names. Learners should first master the common Vietnamese core and then treat commercial color labels as vocabulary from the setting.

11. Useful vocabulary

  • màu — color
  • khác — different/other
  • đen — black
  • trắng — white
  • đỏ — red
  • xanh lá — green
  • xanh dương — blue
  • đậm — dark/deep/intense
  • nhạt — light/pale/mild
  • còn — remain/still have, in this stock context

12. Vietnam in real life

Color words show again that languages divide experience differently. Bare xanh is not “bad Vietnamese” because English prefers separate basic words for blue and green. When Vietnamese speakers need precision, they add information.

13. Common beginner mistakes

  • Assuming bare xanh always means exactly blue or exactly green.
  • Believing màu must appear in every color phrase.
  • Confusing màu khác “another color” with màu nào “which color”.
  • Ignoring còn when asking about remaining stock.

Try it

  1. Ask whether there is another color.
  2. Ask whether black is still available.
  3. Say “blue shirt” in two natural forms.
  4. Ask whether xanh means blue or green in this case.

Quick recap

Có màu khác không? asks for another option. Use màu nào to choose and còn...không? to ask about stock. Bare xanh depends on context; add lá/dương/da trời when needed.
