Beginner Unit 8 Lesson 63 of 107

What you will learn

This lesson gives you enough language to understand and give simple directions: go straight, turn left/right, near/far, in front of/behind and across from.

1. Three essential instructions

  • Đi thẳng. — Go straight.
  • Rẽ trái. — Turn left.
  • Rẽ phải. — Turn right.

These three phrases solve a surprising number of beginner situations.

2. Put instructions together

  • Đi thẳng rồi rẽ phải. — Go straight, then turn right.
  • Rẽ trái ở ngã tư. — Turn left at the intersection.
  • Đi thẳng khoảng hai trăm mét. — Go straight about 200 meters.

3. A direction conversation

Khách: Anh ơi, cho em hỏi bưu điện ở đâu ạ?

Người địa phương: Em đi thẳng đường này.

Khách: Đi thẳng phải không anh?

Người địa phương: Ừ. Đến ngã tư thì rẽ trái. Bưu điện ở bên phải.

Khách: Có xa không anh?

Người địa phương: Không xa. Khoảng năm phút đi bộ.

Khách: Dạ, em cảm ơn anh.

4. Useful location vocabulary

  • bên trái — left side
  • bên phải — right side
  • phía trước — in front / ahead
  • phía sau — behind
  • đối diện — opposite / across from
  • ngã tư — crossroads/intersection
  • đường — road/street/way
  • mét — meter
  • đi bộ — walk / go on foot
  • xa — far
  • gần — near

5. Rồi — then / already

In Đi thẳng rồi rẽ phải, rồi connects actions: “go straight, then turn right”. You will later meet rồi in several other common grammatical roles.

6. Có xa không? — Is it far?

The pattern có + adjective + không? is useful:

  • Có xa không? — Is it far?
  • Có gần không? — Is it near?
  • Có khó không? — Is it difficult?

7. Vietnam in real life

Addresses and directions can depend on alleys, landmarks, intersections and locally known places. In dense neighborhoods, “next to the coffee shop” may be more useful than a formal street number. Maps are common, but spoken landmark-based directions remain important.

8. Common beginner mistake

Trái and phải also have meanings outside direction language. Learn the complete phrases rẽ trái, rẽ phải, bên trái, bên phải so your brain recognizes them quickly.

Try it

  1. Say “Go straight and turn left.”
  2. Say “It is on the right.”
  3. Ask “Is it far?”
  4. Give directions from your home to one nearby place using at least three phrases from this lesson.

Quick recap

Master đi thẳng, rẽ trái, rẽ phải first. Then add landmarks, distance and location words. Real Vietnamese directions often combine language with visible surroundings.
