Hàng trăm, nghìn, triệu — Reading larger numbers
Move beyond 100 and learn the number patterns needed for prices, population, addresses and everyday amounts in Vietnam.
What you will learn
You already know the basic numbers from 0 to 100. This lesson extends that system to trăm, nghìn/ngàn and triệu, which you will need constantly for money and everyday quantities in Vietnam.
1. Hundreds — trăm
- 100 — một trăm
- 200 — hai trăm
- 500 — năm trăm
- 900 — chín trăm
2. Numbers inside a hundred
- 125 — một trăm hai mươi lăm
- 248 — hai trăm bốn mươi tám
- 375 — ba trăm bảy mươi lăm
The familiar changes such as mười lăm continue to appear inside larger numbers.
3. When a zero sits in the middle
You may hear lẻ or linh, depending on region and speaker:
- 105 — một trăm lẻ năm
- 105 — một trăm linh năm
Both forms are common. Do not treat one as the only “correct” Vietnamese for all regions.
4. Nghìn and ngàn
Nghìn and ngàn both mean thousand. Regional preference varies.
- 1.000 — một nghìn / một ngàn
- 10.000 — mười nghìn / mười ngàn
- 25.000 — hai mươi lăm nghìn / hai mươi lăm ngàn
- 100.000 — một trăm nghìn / một trăm ngàn
5. Triệu — million
- 1.000.000 — một triệu
- 2.000.000 — hai triệu
- 10.000.000 — mười triệu
- 25.500.000 — hai mươi lăm triệu năm trăm nghìn
6. Vietnamese money makes large numbers normal
Vietnamese prices frequently use thousands and millions:
- 20.000 đồng — hai mươi nghìn đồng
- 150.000 đồng — một trăm năm mươi nghìn đồng
- 2.500.000 đồng — hai triệu năm trăm nghìn đồng
This is why large numbers belong early in a Vietnamese course.
7. A short conversation
Khách: Cái này bao nhiêu tiền?
Người bán: Hai trăm năm mươi nghìn.
Khách: Hai trăm năm mươi nghìn à?
Người bán: Dạ.
Khách: Còn cái kia?
Người bán: Ba trăm hai mươi nghìn.
8. Written separators can look different
In Vietnam you may see large numbers written with dots, spaces or other formatting depending on context, for example 1.000.000 or 1 000 000. Focus first on understanding the spoken grouping.
9. Useful vocabulary
- trăm — hundred
- nghìn / ngàn — thousand
- triệu — million
- lẻ / linh — zero-gap word in certain numbers
- đồng — Vietnamese currency unit
- giá — price
- bao nhiêu — how much/how many
10. Vietnam in real life
A learner arriving in Vietnam may encounter 30 nghìn, 200 nghìn and 2 triệu on the first day. Large-number fluency is therefore practical communication, not advanced mathematics.
11. Common beginner mistakes
- Forgetting that nghìn and ngàn are regional variants.
- Reading Vietnamese prices digit by digit instead of grouping them.
- Confusing decimal/thousands separators with the spoken value.
Try it
- Read 125 in Vietnamese.
- Read 25,000 using both nghìn and ngàn.
- Read 2,500,000.
- Imagine a price of 350,000 đồng and say it aloud.
Quick recap
Trăm, nghìn/ngàn and triệu extend the number system you already know. In Vietnam they are essential for money and daily life.
