Ở quán cà phê — A practical café visit
Use familiar Vietnamese to enter a café, order a drink, adjust simple preferences, ask about wifi or the restroom, and pay without assuming every café follows the same service model.
What you will learn
B89 is a practical situation lesson. You already know how to order, specify quantity, ask for help and pay. Now you put those pieces together in a café.
1. Entering the café
Depending on the place, a staff member may greet you, point to a table, ask how many people there are, or let you choose a seat yourself.
- Một người ạ.
- Hai người.
- Em ngồi đây được không ạ?
Do not assume every café has a host or table service.
2. Looking at the menu
- Cho em xem menu với ạ.
- Ở đây có cà phê sữa đá không?
- Có trà nóng không?
Menu is widely used in modern service contexts. You may also see thực đơn.
3. Ordering one drink
- Cho tôi một cà phê sữa đá.
- Cho em một ly trà đào.
- Cho anh một cà phê đen.
The self-reference changes with the relationship. B51 already taught this pattern.
4. Size and ice
Modern cafés may ask about size or ice:
- Size nhỏ hay lớn ạ?
- Ít đá thôi ạ.
- Không đá.
Vocabulary and ordering systems vary by brand and café. Learn the communicative goal, not one company’s menu language.
5. Sugar and sweetness
- Ít ngọt thôi.
- Không đường.
- Cho em ít đường thôi.
Ít ngọt and ít đường are related but not identical: sweetness may come from ingredients besides added sugar.
6. Asking about wifi
- Cho hỏi, ở đây có wifi không ạ?
- Mật khẩu wifi là gì ạ?
Mật khẩu means password. This is practical recognition vocabulary, not a new grammar lesson.
7. Asking for the restroom
You can ask:
Chị ơi, cho em hỏi nhà vệ sinh ở đâu ạ?
B96 will focus on this situation in more detail. Here it appears naturally inside a café visit.
8. At the counter or at the table?
Some cafés take payment when you order. Others bring a bill later. Some use table numbers, QR ordering or self-service pickup.
Do not memorize one café workflow as “the Vietnamese system”.
9. Paying
- Tính tiền giúp em với.
- Cho em thanh toán.
- Em chuyển khoản được không ạ?
Payment options vary. B52 already warned not to assume every business accepts every method.
10. A short café dialogue
Nhân viên: Anh dùng gì ạ?
Khách: Cho anh một cà phê sữa đá, ít ngọt thôi.
Nhân viên: Dạ. Anh uống tại đây hay mang đi?
Khách: Uống tại đây.
Nhân viên: Dạ.
11. Tại đây / mang đi
- uống tại đây — drink here
- mang đi — take away/to go
You may also hear English-influenced service vocabulary, but these Vietnamese expressions are broadly useful.
12. Calling staff
If you need attention:
- Em ơi...
- Anh ơi...
- Chị ơi...
Choose according to the relationship. Do not call every staff member bạn.
13. Common beginner mistakes
- Assuming tôi is always the best self-reference.
- Learning one café chain’s ordering vocabulary as universal Vietnamese.
- Assuming every café has table service.
- Using ít đường and ít ngọt as if they were always identical.
Try it
- Order one iced milk coffee with less sweetness.
- Ask whether wifi is available.
- Ask for the wifi password respectfully.
- Ask to pay by bank transfer.
Quick recap
A café visit reuses ordering, quantity, service address, cho hỏi, small particles and payment language. The exact service workflow varies from place to place.
