Tôi đi làm / đi học — Work and study as daily activities

Use đi làm and đi học naturally, connect them to place, time and transport, and distinguish the daily activity from occupation or school/workplace identity.

Beginner Unit 9 Lesson 72 of 107

What you will learn

B36 and B37 taught occupation and where someone works or studies. B72 focuses on the everyday activity: đi làm and đi học.

1. Tôi đi làm

  • Tôi đi làm lúc bảy giờ.
  • Sáng nào tôi cũng đi làm.
  • Hôm nay tôi không đi làm.

Đi làm commonly means go to work / go work, depending on context.

2. Tôi đi học

  • Em đi học lúc bảy giờ.
  • Chiều nay em đi học.
  • Hôm nay em không đi học.

Đi học focuses on going to study/attend school or class. The exact institution comes from context.

3. Đi làm is not the same as nghề nghiệp

Compare:

  • Anh làm nghề gì? — asks occupation.
  • Anh làm ở đâu? — asks workplace.
  • Hôm nay anh có đi làm không? — asks about today’s activity.

These are related but different questions.

4. Đi học is not the same as học ở đâu

  • Em học ở đâu? — asks school/place of study.
  • Em đi học lúc mấy giờ? — asks daily schedule.

Keep identity/place questions separate from routine questions.

5. Add time

  • Tôi đi làm lúc tám giờ.
  • Em đi học lúc bảy giờ sáng.

This reuses B71 and the time system from Unit 3.

6. Add transport

  • Tôi đi làm bằng xe máy.
  • Tôi đi xe buýt đi làm.
  • Em đi bộ đến trường.

The first sentence explicitly marks the means. In real speech, other word orders are possible depending on what the speaker wants to emphasize. At Beginner level, keep the sentence clear rather than chasing every possible pattern.

7. Đi làm vs làm việc

Đi làm commonly refers to going to work or being in the work routine. Làm việc focuses more directly on working/doing work.

  • Bảy giờ tôi đi làm.
  • Tám giờ tôi bắt đầu làm việc.

You only need to recognize the distinction here.

8. Đi học vs học

  • Bảy giờ em đi học. — go to school/class
  • Tối em học tiếng Việt. — study Vietnamese

Học can describe the activity of studying without movement to a school.

9. A short conversation

Lan: Anh đi làm lúc mấy giờ?

Minh: Khoảng bảy giờ.

Lan: Anh đi bằng gì?

Minh: Anh đi xe máy.

Lan: Chỗ làm có xa không?

Minh: Không xa lắm, khoảng bốn cây số.

10. Daily schedules differ

Not everyone works Monday to Friday, studies in the morning or travels at the same time. Shift work, university schedules, remote work, informal work and family businesses all create different routines.

11. Hôm nay tôi nghỉ

You may hear:

  • Hôm nay tôi nghỉ.
  • Hôm nay tôi nghỉ làm.
  • Hôm nay em nghỉ học.

Nghỉ can mean take a break, have a day off or be absent depending on context. Recognition is enough here; later lessons can expand it.

12. Useful vocabulary

  • đi làm — go to work / participate in work routine
  • đi học — go to school/class
  • làm việc — work/do work
  • học — study/learn
  • chỗ làm — workplace, conversational
  • trường — school
  • nghỉ — rest/day off/absence depending on context

13. Vietnam in real life

Đi làm covers a wide range of work arrangements. Do not imagine only office employment. A shop owner, factory worker, delivery rider, teacher or market seller can all talk about their workday using ordinary daily-life language.

14. Common beginner mistakes

  • Using the occupation question when you really want to ask today’s schedule.
  • Assuming đi học always means physically going to a school building in every context.
  • Translating đi làm word by word and missing its routine meaning.
  • Assuming every person has the same work/school timetable.

Try it

  1. Say what time you go to work or study.
  2. Say how you travel there.
  3. Ask where someone works.
  4. Ask whether someone goes to work today.

Quick recap

Đi làm and đi học describe everyday activities. Keep them distinct from occupation, workplace and school identity, then connect them naturally to time and transport.
