Sáng, trưa, chiều, tối — Parts of the day

Learn the Vietnamese day in real-life blocks: morning, noon, afternoon and evening, and combine them naturally with clock time.

Beginner Unit 3 Lesson 25 of 107

What you will learn

You already know how to tell clock time. Vietnamese also commonly places activities inside parts of the day: sáng, trưa, chiều and tối.

1. The main day parts

  • sáng — morning
  • trưa — noon / midday
  • chiều — afternoon
  • tối — evening/night in everyday scheduling
  • đêm — night, especially later at night

2. Time + part of day

  • 7 giờ sáng — 7 a.m.
  • 12 giờ trưa — noon
  • 3 giờ chiều — 3 p.m.
  • 8 giờ tối — 8 p.m.
  • 12 giờ đêm — midnight

3. Activity + time

  • Tôi đi làm lúc 8 giờ sáng.
  • Em ăn trưa lúc 12 giờ.
  • Anh về nhà lúc 6 giờ chiều.
  • Chị ngủ lúc 11 giờ tối.

Lúc is useful for locating an event at a time.

4. This morning, this afternoon, tonight

  • sáng nay — this morning
  • trưa nay — this noon/midday
  • chiều nay — this afternoon
  • tối nay — tonight

5. A short conversation

Hà: Tối nay anh có bận không?

Ben: Không. Sao vậy?

Hà: Đi ăn nhé?

Ben: Được. Mấy giờ?

Hà: 7 giờ tối.

Ben: Được.

6. Boundaries are not mathematical

The exact boundary between sáng, trưa, chiều and tối is not a strict grammar formula. Daily routines and context influence how speakers divide the day.

7. Meals reinforce the day parts

  • ăn sáng — eat breakfast
  • ăn trưa — eat lunch
  • ăn tối — eat dinner

These phrases will return later in Daily Life and Food units.

8. Useful vocabulary

  • sáng — morning
  • trưa — noon
  • chiều — afternoon
  • tối — evening/night
  • đêm — night
  • lúc — at the time of
  • hôm nay — today
  • bận — busy

9. Vietnam in real life

Daily schedules can differ by region, occupation and climate. Lunch may be relatively early for some workers, while evening activity in large cities can continue late. Learn the language first without assuming one national timetable.

10. Common beginner mistake

Do not translate every English “night” automatically as đêm. For ordinary plans such as “tonight at 8”, Vietnamese normally uses tối nay lúc 8 giờ.

Try it

  1. Say 7 a.m.
  2. Say 3 p.m.
  3. Say what time you eat dinner.
  4. Ask whether someone is busy tonight.

Quick recap

Sáng, trưa, chiều, tối organize everyday time. Combine them with clock time and lúc to make schedules much clearer.
