Gọi điện thoại — Starting, handling and ending a simple phone call
Use alo appropriately on the phone, identify yourself, ask who is speaking, handle a wrong number or missed call, and end a call naturally without treating phone Vietnamese as face-to-face speech with the same visual context.
What you will learn
Phone calls remove visual context. You cannot see the other person’s age, expression or surroundings, so identification and relationship can require more explicit language.
1. Alo?
Alo? is a common way to answer or open a telephone call.
Do not use alo as a universal face-to-face greeting. Its core everyday home is phone/voice communication.
2. Identify yourself
- Alo, em là Mai đây.
- Alo, tôi là Daniel.
- Cháu là Nam đây ạ.
Đây can help mark “this is me speaking” in this context.
3. Ask who is speaking
- Cho hỏi ai đấy ạ?
- Ai đấy?
The shorter form may be normal between close people. The fuller form is safer when the caller is unknown.
4. Ask for a person
- Cho em gặp chị Lan được không ạ?
- Anh Minh có ở đó không ạ?
The exact phrasing depends on whether you are calling a home, workplace or personal phone.
5. Is this ...?
- Đây có phải số của anh Minh không ạ?
- Cho hỏi đây có phải nhà hàng Hoa Mai không ạ?
This is useful when you want to verify the number or business before continuing.
6. Wrong number
- Xin lỗi, anh gọi nhầm số rồi.
- Chắc chị gọi nhầm số rồi ạ.
Nhầm số means call/dial the wrong number in this context.
7. The person cannot talk now
- Bây giờ em đang bận.
- Anh gọi lại sau nhé.
- Lát nữa em gọi lại.
Gọi lại means call again/call back. Lát nữa means a little later.
8. No answer / missed call
Useful recognition vocabulary:
- không nghe máy — not answer the phone;
- cuộc gọi nhỡ — missed call;
- máy bận — line/phone busy, depending on context.
Phone interfaces may use different wording.
9. Can you hear me?
- Anh nghe rõ không?
- Em nghe không rõ.
Nghe rõ is about hearing clearly. B99 will distinguish this from understanding the language.
10. Ending the call
- Vậy nhé, lát nữa nói tiếp.
- Ừ, chào em nhé.
- Dạ, em chào anh ạ.
Endings vary strongly with relationship. There is no single mandatory “goodbye formula”.
11. A short phone call
Mai: Alo?
Lan: Alo, chị Lan đây. Em đang ở đâu?
Mai: Em đang trên đường. Khoảng mười phút nữa em đến.
Lan: Ừ, đến nơi gọi chị nhé.
Mai: Dạ.
12. Unknown callers
You do not have to provide personal information to an unknown caller. If a call feels suspicious or inappropriate, clarity and safety are more important than keeping the conversation going.
13. Common beginner mistakes
- Using alo as if it were the normal greeting in every setting.
- Forgetting that phone calls lack visual clues for relationship and identity.
- Confusing không nghe rõ with không hiểu.
- Feeling obligated to answer personal questions from an unknown caller.
Try it
- Answer a phone call and identify yourself.
- Ask who is speaking respectfully.
- Tell someone they called the wrong number.
- Say you are busy and will call back later.
Quick recap
Phone Vietnamese needs more explicit identification because visual context is gone. Alo, ... đây, gọi lại, nhầm số are practical tools, while relationship still shapes the pronouns and ending.
