Hôm nay là thứ mấy? — Days of the week
Learn the Vietnamese weekday system, why Monday starts with thứ hai, and how to ask about schedules.
What you will learn
Vietnamese weekday names are highly systematic. Once you understand thứ plus numbers, most of the week becomes easy to remember.
1. The days
- thứ hai — Monday
- thứ ba — Tuesday
- thứ tư — Wednesday
- thứ năm — Thursday
- thứ sáu — Friday
- thứ bảy — Saturday
- chủ nhật — Sunday
2. Why does Monday start with “two”?
The weekday system uses thứ + number for Monday through Saturday, while Sunday is chủ nhật. For learners, the useful point is the pattern itself rather than trying to translate each name literally.
3. Hôm nay là thứ mấy?
Hôm nay là thứ mấy? — What day of the week is today?
Answers:
- Hôm nay là thứ hai.
- Hôm nay là thứ sáu.
4. Ngày mai and hôm qua
- hôm nay — today
- ngày mai — tomorrow
- hôm qua — yesterday
You will study these time-reference words more fully in B28.
5. Asking about a schedule
- Thứ hai anh có đi làm không?
- Thứ bảy em có học không?
- Chủ nhật chị có rảnh không?
6. A short conversation
Lan: Hôm nay là thứ mấy?
Tom: Thứ năm.
Lan: Tối mai anh có bận không?
Tom: Tối thứ sáu à? Không.
Lan: Vậy đi ăn nhé.
Tom: Được.
7. Thứ can disappear in familiar context
In very clear contexts, speakers may shorten references, but beginners should first keep the full weekday names. This avoids ambiguity while you are building the system.
8. Useful vocabulary
- thứ — ordinal/day marker in weekday names
- chủ nhật — Sunday
- hôm nay — today
- ngày mai — tomorrow
- hôm qua — yesterday
- rảnh — free/not busy
- lịch — schedule/calendar
9. Vietnam in real life
Weekend schedules vary widely. Many businesses and services operate on Saturday or Sunday, so knowing the weekday is more useful than assuming a Western-style workweek applies everywhere.
10. Common beginner mistakes
- Calling Monday thứ nhất.
- Trying to translate weekday names word by word instead of learning the system.
- Forgetting that Sunday is chủ nhật, not a numbered thứ day.
Try it
- Say Monday through Sunday.
- Ask what day today is.
- Say what day tomorrow is.
- Ask whether someone is free on Saturday.
Quick recap
Monday through Saturday follow thứ + number; Sunday is chủ nhật. Use Hôm nay là thứ mấy? to ask the weekday.
