Một cuộc gặp lần đầu — Your first complete conversation
Bring Unit 1 together in one longer first-meeting conversation: greeting, names, origin, address terms, polite responses, wellbeing and saying goodbye.
What you will learn
This is the first integration lesson. It does not try to teach a large new grammar point. Instead, it brings together what you have already met in Unit 1 and shows how the pieces interact in one conversation.
1. The situation
Mai is Vietnamese. She meets Daniel, an Australian who has recently moved to Vietnam. Mai appears slightly younger, and during the conversation they settle naturally into an anh–em relationship.
2. Read the full conversation
Mai: Chào anh.
Daniel: Chào em.
Mai: Em tên là Mai. Còn anh?
Daniel: Anh tên là Daniel.
Mai: Anh là người nước nào?
Daniel: Anh là người Úc. Anh đến từ Melbourne.
Mai: Bây giờ anh sống ở đâu?
Daniel: Anh sống ở Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh.
Mai: Anh ở Việt Nam lâu chưa?
Daniel: Chưa lâu. Anh mới ở đây sáu tháng.
Mai: Dạo này anh khỏe không?
Daniel: Anh khỏe, cảm ơn em. Còn em?
Mai: Em cũng khỏe.
Daniel: Rất vui được gặp em.
Mai: Em cũng vậy.
Daniel: Anh phải đi rồi. Hẹn gặp lại em nhé.
Mai: Dạ. Em chào anh.
3. What happened with the pronouns?
Daniel and Mai did not continue with tôi–bạn. They used anh–em.
Daniel refers to himself as anh and Mai as em. Mai refers to herself as em and Daniel as anh.
This is not a grammar trick. It is the relationship system you studied earlier.
4. Notice how old lessons return
- Chào anh / chào em — B01
- Em tên là... / Còn anh? — B02
- người Úc — B03
- đến từ / sống ở — B04
- anh–em — B05
- Dạ / chưa — B06
- cảm ơn — B07
- Dạo này... khỏe không? — B08
- Rất vui được gặp / hẹn gặp lại — B09
5. You do not need to say everything
Real conversations are usually less complete than a teaching dialogue. A Vietnamese speaker may skip a subject, shorten a question, or move directly to another topic when the context is clear.
This dialogue is intentionally fuller so you can see the structures. Your goal is not to memorize it word for word.
6. A more casual version
After people become comfortable, parts of the same interaction might sound shorter:
Mai: Anh ở Việt Nam lâu chưa?
Daniel: Mới sáu tháng thôi.
Mai: Vậy à? Anh thấy Việt Nam thế nào?
Daniel: Anh thích. Đồ ăn ngon.
This already contains language that will be studied later. It is included to show you where Beginner Vietnamese is going, not as material you must master now.
7. Useful review vocabulary
- tên — name
- người Úc — Australian
- đến từ — come from
- sống ở — live in
- lâu chưa — for long yet?
- dạo này — lately
- khỏe — well/healthy
- cảm ơn — thank you
- rất vui được gặp — nice to meet
- hẹn gặp lại — see you again
8. Vietnam in real life
A first conversation in Vietnam may include questions about age, work, family, hometown or relationship status earlier than some foreign learners expect. This varies enormously by person and context.
Do not treat every personal question as a fixed cultural rule. Learn to notice intention, age, familiarity and setting.
9. Common beginner mistakes
- Trying to keep tôi–bạn even after the conversation has clearly moved into another relationship pair.
- Answering “Where are you from?” when the person actually asked where you live now.
- Using tạm biệt automatically in every departure.
- Trying to reproduce a long textbook dialogue exactly instead of learning reusable pieces.
10. Try it: rebuild the conversation
- Replace Daniel with yourself.
- Give your real name and country.
- Say where you currently live.
- Choose an appropriate form of address for the person you imagine speaking to.
- End with a natural goodbye.
11. Mini challenge
Without looking back, try to say five things:
- Hello.
- My name is...
- I am from...
- I live in...
- Nice to meet you. See you again.
Quick recap
Unit 1 is not mainly about memorizing nine separate lessons. It gives you the pieces for one human interaction: meet someone, identify each other, choose a relationship, exchange basic information politely, and leave naturally.
