Tại sao? Vì... — Asking and giving reasons
Ask why with tại sao and answer with vì, while learning that everyday Vietnamese often uses shorter reason patterns.
What you will learn
This lesson introduces a simple reason pair: Tại sao...? and Vì.... You will also see more conversational alternatives such as sao and answers that give a reason without explicitly saying vì.
1. Tại sao? — why?
- Tại sao anh học tiếng Việt? — Why do you study Vietnamese?
- Tại sao chị không đi? — Why aren’t you going?
- Tại sao em mệt? — Why are you tired?
2. Vì... — because...
- Vì tôi sống ở Việt Nam. — Because I live in Vietnam.
- Vì trời mưa. — Because it is raining.
- Vì em bận. — Because I’m busy, said as em.
3. Put the pair together
Tại sao anh học tiếng Việt?
Vì anh sống ở Việt Nam.
This is a clear beginner pattern. In natural conversation, however, the answer may simply be:
Anh sống ở Việt Nam.
The context already makes it a reason.
4. Sao? — a shorter everyday “why/how come?”
You may hear sao instead of tại sao:
- Sao anh không đi? — Why aren’t you going?
- Sao hôm nay em mệt vậy? — How come you are tired today?
Sao is very common and can have other functions too. Beginners should first recognize it as a frequent conversational form.
5. A short conversation
Hương: Sao hôm nay anh không uống cà phê?
David: Vì tối qua anh ngủ muộn.
Hương: Anh mệt à?
David: Ừ, hơi mệt.
Hương: Vậy uống trà nhé?
David: Được.
6. Reasons can come before or after
Vietnamese can organize reasons in more than one way:
- Anh không đi vì anh bận.
- Vì anh bận nên anh không đi.
The second pattern vì...nên... will be studied more fully later. For now, recognize that vì introduces a reason.
7. Do not overuse tại sao
Tại sao is correct and clear, but in close conversation it can sound more formal than a short sao question. Context, tone and relationship matter.
8. Useful vocabulary
- tại sao — why
- sao — why/how, depending on context
- vì — because
- nên — therefore/so, in certain structures
- trời mưa — it is raining
- bận — busy
- ngủ muộn — sleep late/go to bed late
- tối qua — last night
9. Vietnam in real life
Vietnamese speakers may ask Sao? by itself when they want a reason or explanation. Depending on tone, the same tiny word can sound curious, surprised, concerned or challenging.
10. Common beginner mistake
Do not assume every answer to “why” must begin with vì. Vietnamese often gives the reason directly when the conversational link is obvious.
Try it
- Ask why someone studies Vietnamese.
- Answer “Because I live in Vietnam.”
- Change Tại sao anh không đi? into a more conversational question.
- Give one reason without using vì.
Quick recap
Tại sao asks why, vì introduces a reason, and conversational Vietnamese often shortens tại sao to sao or omits vì when the reason is already clear.
