Học ở đâu? Làm ở đâu? — Study and work locations
Ask where someone studies or works, distinguish institution, place and field, and reuse ở đâu in a practical social context.
What you will learn
You already know ở đâu?. This lesson applies it to two common social topics: where someone studies and where someone works.
1. Anh/chị làm ở đâu?
- Anh làm ở đâu? — Where do you work?
- Chị làm ở đâu?
- Anh ấy làm ở bệnh viện.
- Chị ấy làm ở công ty phần mềm.
2. Học ở đâu?
- Em học ở đâu? — Where do you study?
- Em học ở Đại học Quốc gia.
- Con học ở trường nào? — Which school do you attend?
3. Ở marks location in many useful phrases
- sống ở Hà Nội
- ở nhà
- làm ở bệnh viện
- học ở trường
Do not translate ở by choosing one fixed English preposition. Learn the Vietnamese location pattern.
4. Where you work is not what you do
- Anh làm nghề gì? — occupation
- Anh làm ở đâu? — workplace
- Anh đang làm gì? — current action
5. What do you study?
- Em học gì? — What do you study?
- Em học ngành gì? — What is your field/major?
6. A short conversation
Nam: Em học hay đi làm rồi?
Hương: Em đang học đại học.
Nam: Em học ở đâu?
Hương: Em học ở Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh.
Nam: Học ngành gì?
Hương: Em học công nghệ thông tin.
Nam: À, anh cũng làm bên công nghệ.

học means study/learn; đi học means go to school/class or attend school in many contexts.
8. Làm việc and đi làm
làm việc means work/do work; đi làm means go to work or be in the routine of working.
9. Place can be specific or general
- làm ở bệnh viện
- làm ở quận 1
- làm ở Đồng Nai
- làm ở công ty của gia đình
10. Useful vocabulary
- học — study/learn
- đi học — go to school/class
- làm việc — work
- đi làm — go to work
- trường — school

11. Vietnam in real life
For many people, hometown, current residence, place of study and place of work are all different. Internal migration for education and employment makes these genuinely different questions.
12. Common beginner mistakes
- Answering làm ở đâu? with an occupation instead of a place.
- Confusing học gì? with học ở đâu?.
- Forcing one English preposition onto every use of ở.
Try it
- Ask where someone works.
- Ask where someone studies.
- Ask what field someone studies.
- Give different answers to làm nghề gì?, làm ở đâu? and đang làm gì?.
Quick recap
Làm ở đâu? asks for workplace/location; học ở đâu? asks for study location. Keep place, occupation, subject and current action separate.
