Nghìn, ngàn, triệu và tiền Việt — Using Vietnamese money
Apply large numbers to real Vietnamese prices: đồng, nghìn/ngàn, triệu, shortened price speech and common written forms without repeating the full number lesson.
What you will learn
B22 taught you how large Vietnamese numbers are built. This lesson does something different: it applies those numbers to money in real shopping situations.
You will learn what speakers leave out, what they keep, and how to avoid a costly misunderstanding when a price is shortened.
1. Đồng — the Vietnamese currency unit
The currency is the Vietnamese đồng.
- 20.000 đồng — hai mươi nghìn đồng
- 150.000 đồng — một trăm năm mươi nghìn đồng
- 2.000.000 đồng — hai triệu đồng
In ordinary conversation, đồng is often omitted when everyone already knows that the number is a price.
2. Nghìn and ngàn
Both nghìn and ngàn mean thousand.
- 50 nghìn
- 50 ngàn
Both can mean 50,000 đồng. Regional and individual preferences differ; neither should be taught as the only legitimate form.
3. Triệu
- một triệu — 1,000,000
- hai triệu rưỡi — 2,500,000
- ba triệu hai — can mean 3,200,000 in a clearly established price context
The last form is conversational shorthand and depends heavily on context. Beginners should confirm whenever the amount could be ambiguous.
4. Prices are often shortened
A seller may say:
- Hai mươi.
- Năm chục.
- Một trăm hai.
In the right situation these may be understood as 20,000; 50,000; or 120,000 đồng. The missing unit comes from shared context.
Do not guess the unit when the context is unclear.
5. Năm chục — fifty
Chục means a group of ten and appears in ordinary number talk:
- hai chục — twenty
- năm chục — fifty
You do not need to replace the normal hai mươi, năm mươi. You need to recognize chục because real speakers use it.
6. Rưỡi in money
You already know rưỡi from time. With money:
- hai triệu rưỡi — 2.5 million
- một triệu rưỡi — 1.5 million
The same word “half” combines with a different unit.
7. Written prices
You may see:
- 50.000đ
- 50.000 đồng
- 50k in informal digital listings/messages
k is common informal shorthand for thousand in online/commercial writing, but it is not the normal spoken Vietnamese word. Say năm mươi nghìn/ngàn, not “năm mươi k”.
8. A short market conversation
Khách: Chị ơi, cái này bao nhiêu?
Người bán: Một trăm hai.
Khách: Một trăm hai mươi nghìn phải không chị?
Người bán: Đúng rồi em.
Khách: Còn cái kia?
Người bán: Chín chục.
9. Confirming a price is good Vietnamese
If a shortened amount is unclear, ask:
- Một trăm hai mươi nghìn phải không?
- Hai triệu rưỡi đúng không?
- Là 250 nghìn hả chị? — conversational, relationship-sensitive
Confirmation is not a failure of language ability; it is practical communication.
10. “Tiền Việt” and VND
You may hear tiền Việt informally to contrast Vietnamese currency with another currency. In formal financial contexts, VND is the standard currency code.
In ordinary shopping inside Vietnam, people usually do not need to say “Vietnamese đồng” every time.
11. Useful vocabulary
- đồng — Vietnamese currency unit
- nghìn / ngàn — thousand
- triệu — million
- chục — ten/group of ten
- rưỡi — half
- giá — price
- tiền Việt — Vietnamese money/currency, informal contextual phrase
- đúng không / phải không — correct?/right?
12. Vietnam in real life
Vietnamese currency creates large-looking numbers, so shortening is natural and frequent. The learner’s real task is not only reading digits but detecting the implied unit from context — and asking when that unit is not safe to infer.
13. Common beginner mistakes
- Repeating the entire large-number lesson instead of learning price context.
- Assuming nghìn is correct and ngàn is wrong, or vice versa.
- Hearing một trăm hai and assuming an amount without checking context.
- Reading informal written 50k aloud as “năm mươi k”.
Try it
- Say 50,000 đồng using both nghìn and ngàn.
- Say 2,500,000 đồng.
- Ask for confirmation that a price is 120,000 đồng.
- Explain why a seller can sometimes say only hai mươi.
Quick recap
Vietnamese money uses number knowledge you already have, but real shopping adds omission and shorthand. Recognize nghìn/ngàn, triệu, chục, rưỡi, and confirm any shortened price that is not clear.
