Giúp tôi / giúp em với — Asking someone for help

Use giúp + person and sentence-final với in ordinary requests for help, choose the self-reference that fits the relationship, and avoid treating với here as the normal preposition “with”.

Beginner Unit 10 Lesson 84 of 107

What you will learn

Vietnamese requests often depend on relationship words and small particles. In B84, you learn a very practical pattern: giúp tôi với, giúp em với, giúp cháu với.

1. Giúp tôi với

  • Giúp tôi với.
  • Anh giúp tôi với.
  • Chị giúp tôi với.

Giúp means help. The word after it identifies the person receiving the help.

2. Giúp em với

If the speaker positions themself as em relative to the listener:

  • Anh giúp em với.
  • Chị giúp em với.

The difference between tôi and em is not merely grammar. It reflects the relationship.

3. Với here is not ordinary “with”

Compare:

  • Tôi đi với Lan. — with Lan
  • Giúp tôi với. — please/help me, with a request-softening or appealing effect

The second với is not naming a companion. Do not translate it mechanically as English “with”.

4. Why add với?

A bare:

Giúp tôi.

can sound more direct. Adding với often makes the utterance sound more like an appeal/request:

Giúp tôi với.

But tone and relationship still matter.

5. Add the task

  • Giúp tôi mở cửa với.
  • Giúp em xem cái này với.
  • Giúp cháu xem địa chỉ này với ạ.

The task normally follows giúp + person.

6. Call the person first

  • Anh ơi, giúp em với.
  • Chị ơi, giúp tôi một chút với.

This directly reuses B79. The sequence is natural: call the person, then make the request.

7. Một chút

Một chút can help frame the request as small or limited:

Giúp tôi một chút với.

This does not guarantee the task is objectively small. It can also be a social softener.

8. Respectful version

A younger speaker to an older person might say:

Chú ơi, chú giúp cháu xem cái này với ạ.

The respectful effect comes from the whole package: chú/cháu, wording, với, ạ and tone.

9. Do not overbuild the sentence

In an urgent situation:

Giúp tôi với!

may be exactly what is needed. Politeness choices change when safety or urgency is involved.

10. A short conversation

Khách: Anh ơi, giúp tôi một chút với.

Nhân viên: Vâng, anh cần gì ạ?

Khách: Tôi không mở được cái này.

Nhân viên: Để tôi xem.

11. Helping someone else

  • Tôi giúp anh nhé.
  • Để em giúp chị.

B84 focuses mainly on asking for help, but recognize that giúp also works when offering help.

12. Relationship changes the pronouns

Possible self-references include tôi, em, cháu, con and others depending on the relationship. There is no universal replacement pattern such as “me = tôi” in every request.

13. Useful patterns

  • Giúp tôi với.
  • [person] ơi, giúp [self-reference] với.
  • Giúp [self-reference] + task + với.
  • ... với ạ.

14. Common beginner mistakes

  • Translating sentence-final với as ordinary “with”.
  • Using tôi automatically even when the relationship strongly favors another self-reference.
  • Thinking adding với makes any demand polite.
  • Making the sentence unnecessarily long in an urgent situation.

Try it

  1. Ask an older male speaker to help you look at something.
  2. Ask a shop worker for a little help using ơi.
  3. Say “Help me open this, please” without translating word by word.
  4. Explain the difference between đi với Lan and giúp tôi với.

Quick recap

Giúp + person + ... + với is a very useful request pattern. Sentence-final với adds an appealing/requesting effect, while the self-reference still depends on relationship.
