Đây là..., kia là... — Pointing out people and things
Use đây, kia and là to identify people and things, while learning when Vietnamese can leave là out in other sentence types.
What you will learn
This lesson teaches a very useful identification pattern: Đây là... and Kia là.... You will also begin to see an important Vietnamese rule: là is useful in some sentences, but Vietnamese does not put it everywhere English uses “to be”.
1. Đây là...
Đây là... means “This is...” or “Here is...” depending on context.
- Đây là Mai. — This is Mai.
- Đây là bạn tôi. — This is my friend.
- Đây là nhà tôi. — This is my house.
- Đây là cà phê. — This is coffee.
2. Kia là...
Kia là... points to something farther away:
- Kia là anh Nam. — That is Nam over there.
- Kia là trường học. — That is the school.
- Kia là xe của tôi. — That is my vehicle.
3. Đây, đó and kia are not identical
For a first approximation:
- đây — here / this, close to the speaker
- đó — there / that
- kia — over there / that farther away
Real usage depends on situation, gesture and what both speakers can see.
4. Use là to identify
In these examples, là connects one identity to another:
- Đây là em gái tôi. — This is my younger sister.
- Anh ấy là bác sĩ. — He is a doctor.
- Tôi là người Việt Nam. — I am Vietnamese.
5. But Vietnamese does not use là everywhere
Compare:
- Anh ấy là bác sĩ. — He is a doctor.
- Anh ấy cao. — He is tall.
- Trời nóng. — The weather is hot.
Do not write Anh ấy là cao. When an adjective directly describes the subject, Vietnamese usually does not need là.
6. A short conversation
Lan: Đây là ai?
Minh: Đây là anh tôi.
Lan: Anh ấy tên là gì?
Minh: Anh ấy tên là Hùng.
Lan: Còn người kia?
Minh: Kia là bạn anh ấy.
7. Đây là ai?
Ai means “who”. A useful question is:
Đây là ai? — Who is this?
You will study question words more systematically later in Unit 2.
8. Useful vocabulary
- đây — here / this
- đó — there / that
- kia — over there / that farther away
- là — identity/linking word in many structures
- ai — who
- người — person
- bạn — friend
- nhà — house/home
- trường học — school
9. Vietnam in real life
Vietnamese speakers often identify a person together with a relationship: đây là anh tôi, đây là chị Lan, đây là cô giáo của em. The relationship can be more useful socially than simply giving a name.
10. Common beginner mistake
Do not translate every English “am/is/are” as là. Learn là first for identity and classification. Other Vietnamese sentences often work without it.
Try it
- Say “This is my friend.”
- Say “That over there is my house.”
- Ask “Who is this?”
- Explain why Anh ấy cao does not need là.
Quick recap
Đây là... and Kia là... are useful identification patterns. Là is important, but it is not a universal translation of English “to be”.
