Khi không hiểu người Việt nói gì — Diagnose the communication problem
Distinguish not hearing clearly, not knowing a word and not understanding meaning, then respond honestly so the other person knows whether to repeat, explain or clarify.
What you will learn
When communication breaks down, saying only “I don’t understand” is sometimes too vague. B99 helps you identify what kind of problem you have.
1. Tôi không hiểu
Tôi không hiểu.
This is a direct general statement that you do not understand.
2. Tôi chưa hiểu
Tôi chưa hiểu.
As B43 taught, chưa presents understanding as something that has not arrived yet. It can be especially useful after someone has started explaining.
3. Tôi không nghe rõ
Tôi không nghe rõ.
This means the sound was not clear enough for you to hear properly. The problem may be noise, volume, connection quality or pronunciation—not meaning itself.
4. Không nghe rõ is not không hiểu
Compare:
- Tôi không nghe rõ. — I cannot hear clearly.
- Tôi không hiểu. — I do not understand the meaning.
If you diagnose the problem correctly, the other person can help more effectively.
5. Tôi không biết từ này
Tôi không biết từ này.
This tells the speaker that one word is unfamiliar.
You may understand the rest of the sentence perfectly.
6. Tôi chưa hiểu chỗ này
- Tôi chưa hiểu chỗ này.
- Em chưa hiểu ý này ạ.
Pointing to the specific part is often more helpful than saying the entire conversation is impossible.
7. Anh nói gì ạ?
If you simply did not catch a short utterance:
- Anh nói gì ạ?
- Chị nói gì vậy?
Relationship and tone decide which form sounds appropriate.
8. Ý anh là...?
When you think you partly understand, confirm:
Ý anh là ngày mai phải không?
Ý refers to meaning/intention/idea depending on context.
9. Use what you do understand
Suppose you understand 8 giờ but not the rest. You can ask:
8 giờ ở đâu ạ?
This is often better than restarting the whole conversation.
10. Do not pretend to understand
Nodding when you do not understand can create bigger problems with addresses, prices, travel, appointments or safety.
Chưa hiểu is a useful communication tool, not a failure.
11. A short conversation
Người Việt: Mai mình gặp ở sảnh lúc bảy rưỡi nhé.
Học viên: Xin lỗi, em chưa hiểu từ “sảnh” ạ.
Người Việt: Sảnh là khu ở gần cửa vào khách sạn.
Học viên: À, em hiểu rồi. Bảy rưỡi ở sảnh ạ?
Người Việt: Đúng rồi.
12. The next tool: control the speed
Sometimes you understand the words when they are slower but lose them at normal speed. B100 gives you precise ways to ask for slower or repeated speech.
13. Common beginner mistakes
- Using không biết, không hiểu and không nghe rõ as if they were identical.
- Pretending to understand to avoid embarrassment.
- Asking the other person to repeat everything when only one word is the problem.
- Assuming communication difficulty means your Vietnamese is “bad”.
Try it
- Say that you cannot hear clearly.
- Say that you do not know one word.
- Say that you do not understand one part yet.
- Confirm that the other person means tomorrow.
Quick recap
First diagnose the problem: sound, vocabulary or meaning. Then the other person knows whether to repeat, define, explain or confirm.
