Đi xe buýt — Asking, boarding and getting off
Ask whether a bus goes to your destination, find the right stop, understand lên/xuống, ask where to get off and recognize that routes, fares and payment systems differ by city.
What you will learn
B68 only introduced xe buýt. B94 gives you a practical survival sequence: identify the route, board, confirm the destination and get off.
1. Does this bus go to...?
- Cho hỏi xe này có đi đến Bến Thành không ạ?
- Xe buýt này có qua bệnh viện không?
Đi đến and qua answer slightly different route questions: destination vs passing by/through.
2. Which bus?
- Đi xe số mấy ạ?
- Xe nào đi đến ga ạ?
Route numbering and naming depend on the local transport system.
3. Bến and trạm
You may hear:
- bến xe buýt / trạm xe buýt — bus stop/station depending on local usage;
- bến xe — often a larger bus/coach station;
- trạm — stop/station in many contexts.
Local naming is not completely uniform.
4. Lên xe
Lên xe means get on/board the vehicle in this context.
- Lên ở trạm này.
- Lên xe ở đâu ạ?
5. Xuống xe
Xuống xe means get off.
- Xuống ở đâu ạ?
- Cho em xuống ở trạm tiếp theo.
6. Ask someone to tell you
If you are unsure:
Chú ơi, đến trạm Hoa Mai chú nhắc cháu với ạ.
Or to another passenger:
Chị ơi, đến chợ Hoa Mai chị chỉ em với nhé.
The relationship determines the address terms.
7. Trạm tiếp theo
Trạm tiếp theo means the next stop.
- Trạm tiếp theo là gì ạ?
- Xuống trạm tiếp theo.
8. Ask about time
- Đi khoảng bao lâu ạ?
- Khoảng bao nhiêu phút?
Bus duration depends on traffic, stops and route.
9. Fares and payment vary
Depending on the city and system, payment may involve cash, tickets, cards, QR or other methods.
Do not memorize one fare/payment rule as national.
10. Routes change
Bus route numbers, stops, schedules and operating rules can change. Use current local transport information when planning a real trip.
11. A short bus dialogue
Khách: Chú ơi, xe này có qua chợ Hoa Mai không ạ?
Nhân viên: Có.
Khách: Đến đó chú nhắc cháu với ạ.
Nhân viên: Được.
12. When you are unsure
Instead of pretending to understand, confirm:
- Trạm này phải không ạ?
- Em xuống ở đây đúng không?
B99–B100 will later teach stronger strategies for when you do not understand spoken Vietnamese.
13. Common beginner mistakes
- Assuming bus route vocabulary and payment systems are identical across Vietnam.
- Confusing lên and xuống.
- Relying on an old route number without checking current information.
- Staying silent when unsure about the stop.
Try it
- Ask whether a bus goes past a hospital.
- Ask which bus goes to a station.
- Ask someone to tell you when you reach your stop.
- Confirm that you should get off here.
Quick recap
Bus survival language centers on route, stop, lên, xuống and confirmation. Real routes and payment systems are local and can change.
