Ở siêu thị — Finding products and checking out
Use practical Vietnamese to find a product, compare options, ask about size or availability, understand posted prices and complete a checkout in a fixed-price retail setting.
What you will learn
B92 contrasts with the traditional-market situation. In a supermarket, prices are usually posted and the main challenge is often finding products, choosing among options and checking out.
1. Finding a product
- Cho hỏi sữa ở đâu ạ?
- Nước ở khu nào ạ?
- Chị ơi, cho em hỏi có bán cái này không?
Khu here means section/area.
2. Có bán...không?
- Ở đây có bán pin không?
- Có bán loại này không?
Bán means sell. The pattern asks whether the store carries an item.
3. Comparing products
- Cái nào rẻ hơn?
- Loại nào lớn hơn?
- Có loại nhỏ hơn không?
This reuses B57 and B60 rather than teaching comparison again.
4. Posted prices
In most supermarkets, prices are fixed and shown on shelf labels or product tags.
A learner may still ask:
Cho hỏi cái này bao nhiêu ạ?
But bargaining is generally not the normal supermarket interaction.
5. Promotion vocabulary
You may see:
- khuyến mãi — promotion;
- giảm giá — price reduction/discount;
- mua 1 tặng 1 — buy one, get one.
These labels are useful to recognize, but promotion conditions vary and should be read carefully.
6. Size or variant
- Có size lớn hơn không?
- Có màu khác không?
- Có loại không đường không?
Modern retail mixes Vietnamese and borrowed commercial vocabulary. This is normal, but the core sentence patterns remain Vietnamese.
7. Basket and cart
- giỏ — basket;
- xe đẩy — shopping cart/trolley.
Vocabulary can vary by store and region, but these are broadly useful.
8. At checkout
Staff may ask:
- Anh/chị có thẻ thành viên không?
- Anh/chị có cần túi không?
You can answer simply:
- Có.
- Không, cảm ơn.
9. Payment
- Em thanh toán bằng thẻ.
- Em chuyển khoản.
- Em trả tiền mặt.
Do not assume every checkout offers every payment method.
10. Receipt
- Cho em hóa đơn với ạ.
- Cho em xin biên lai.
Hóa đơn and biên lai are not always interchangeable in legal/accounting contexts. At Beginner level, recognize both as receipt/bill-related vocabulary and ask staff if the exact document matters.
11. A short supermarket dialogue
Khách: Chị ơi, cho em hỏi sữa ở đâu ạ?
Nhân viên: Ở dãy số ba, bên trái em nhé.
Khách: Dạ, cảm ơn chị.
12. Fixed-price does not mean zero questions
You may still need to ask about price labels, promotions, product location, size, stock or checkout. The difference is that negotiation is usually not the central task.
13. Common beginner mistakes
- Bargaining automatically because B91 taught a market.
- Assuming every promotion is simple or unconditional.
- Treating borrowed retail words as if Vietnamese sentence structure disappears.
- Assuming all stores use identical payment and receipt systems.
Try it
- Ask where milk is.
- Ask whether the store sells batteries.
- Ask for a smaller version.
- Decline a shopping bag politely.
Quick recap
A supermarket visit focuses on finding, comparing, availability and checkout. Unlike many market situations, prices are generally posted and bargaining is usually not the main interaction.
