Tôi đến từ... — Hometown, origin and where you live
Learn đến từ, quê ở, sống ở and đang ở so you can describe origin, hometown and current location without treating them as the same thing.
What you will learn
English often asks “Where are you from?” as one broad question. Vietnamese has several useful ways to talk about origin, hometown and residence. This lesson helps you keep those ideas separate.
1. Tôi đến từ...
Tôi đến từ... means “I come from / I am from...” and is easy for beginners to use.
- Tôi đến từ Canada.
- Tôi đến từ Nhật Bản.
- Tôi đến từ Singapore.
2. Bạn đến từ đâu?
To ask:
Bạn đến từ đâu? — Where are you from?
You can replace bạn with an appropriate form of address:
- Anh đến từ đâu?
- Chị đến từ đâu?
- Em đến từ đâu?
3. Quê ở đâu?
For Vietnamese people, quê is a very important everyday concept.
Quê bạn ở đâu? — Where is your hometown/home region?
Quê tôi ở Huế. — My hometown/home region is Huế.
Quê is not always identical to birthplace or current residence. It often carries a sense of family origin and belonging.
4. Sống ở đâu?
Bạn sống ở đâu? — Where do you live?
- Tôi sống ở Đà Nẵng.
- Anh sống ở Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh.
5. Đang ở đâu?
Bây giờ bạn đang ở đâu? asks about the current location.
Compare:
- Tôi đến từ Pháp. — I am from France.
- Tôi sống ở Hà Nội. — I live in Hà Nội.
- Bây giờ tôi đang ở Đà Nẵng. — Right now I am in Đà Nẵng.
One person can truthfully say all three.
6. A short conversation
Hương: Anh đến từ đâu?
Leo: Anh đến từ Pháp.
Hương: Bây giờ anh sống ở đâu?
Leo: Anh sống ở Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh.
Hương: Anh ở Việt Nam lâu chưa?
Leo: Chưa lâu. Anh mới ở đây sáu tháng.
7. Natural Vietnamese may omit words
In everyday conversation you may hear:
- Quê đâu?
- Ở đâu?
- Người nước nào?
These shortened forms depend heavily on context. Beginners should first learn the fuller forms so they can understand what has been omitted.
8. Useful vocabulary
- đến — come / arrive
- từ — from
- đến từ — come from
- đâu — where
- quê — hometown/home region
- sống — live
- đang — marks an ongoing/current situation in many contexts
- bây giờ — now
- ở đây — here
- lâu — long (time)
9. Vietnam in real life
A question about quê can open a longer conversation about family, regional food, accent and local identity. It is often not merely a request for geographical data.
At the same time, Vietnam is highly mobile. Many people live and work far from their quê, especially in large cities and industrial areas.
10. Common beginner mistake
Do not answer every “where” question with the same place. Listen for whether the speaker is asking about origin, quê, where you live, or where you are now.
Try it
- Say where you come from.
- Say where you currently live.
- Ask a Vietnamese speaker where their quê is.
- Say one sentence with đang ở.
Quick recap
Đến từ, quê ở, sống ở and đang ở answer different questions. Learning the distinction early will make later Vietnamese much clearer.
