Hôm nay tôi bận — Talking about being busy or free
Use bận and rảnh with hôm nay, sáng nay, chiều nay and tối nay, ask có bận không naturally, and understand that social answers may be softer than a bare yes/no.
What you will learn
B74 adds two very useful daily-life words: bận and rảnh. You already know hôm nay and basic yes/no questions, so this lesson focuses on natural availability talk.
1. Hôm nay tôi bận
- Hôm nay tôi bận.
- Sáng nay tôi bận.
- Chiều nay tôi hơi bận.
Bận means busy/occupied. It can describe work, study, family matters or any situation that takes your time.
2. Tôi rảnh
- Tối nay tôi rảnh.
- Chiều mai tôi rảnh.
- Cuối tuần này tôi khá rảnh.
Rảnh means free/not occupied in a time-availability sense.
3. Có bận không?
- Hôm nay anh có bận không?
- Chiều nay chị có bận không?
- Tối nay em có rảnh không?
This reuses the có...không? question pattern. The relationship word still changes with the people involved.
4. Short answers
- Có, hôm nay anh hơi bận.
- Không, chiều nay chị rảnh.
- Tối nay chắc không được.
Real answers do not always repeat the exact adjective from the question.
5. Hơi bận / rất bận / bận quá
- Hôm nay tôi hơi bận.
- Tuần này tôi rất bận.
- Hôm nay bận quá.
This reuses degree words from B19. As before, quá can express strong reaction and does not always map mechanically to English “too”.
6. Bận làm gì?
You may hear:
- Hôm nay anh bận gì?
- Chị bận làm gì vậy?
These can sound personal depending on the relationship. A beginner should understand the language but also notice that not every situation requires asking for details.
7. Availability without explaining everything
You can answer without giving a private reason:
- Chiều nay tôi bận.
- Tối nay tôi không rảnh.
- Để hôm khác nhé.
The last example contains a social softener that Unit 10 will teach more systematically. Here, just recognize the practical idea.
8. Bận with work or study
- Sáng nay tôi bận làm việc.
- Chiều nay em bận học.
B72 gives the work/study routine. B74 uses those activities as possible reasons for being busy.
9. A short conversation
Lan: Tối nay anh có rảnh không?
Minh: Tối nay anh hơi bận.
Lan: Còn tối mai?
Minh: Tối mai anh rảnh.
Lan: Vậy mai mình gặp nhé.
Minh: Được.
10. Hôm nay, sáng nay, chiều nay, tối nay
- hôm nay — today
- sáng nay — this morning
- chiều nay — this afternoon
- tối nay — tonight
These time phrases often do enough work to anchor the sentence. Vietnamese verbs do not need to conjugate for each one.
11. Busy is contextual
Someone may say bận because of work, caring for family, travel, study, appointments or simply because they do not have usable time. Do not assume the reason unless it is stated.
12. Social nuance
In invitations and requests, bận may sometimes function as a polite explanation for being unavailable. It can be literal, socially softened, or both. Beginner learners should avoid interrogating the reason.
13. Useful vocabulary
- bận — busy/occupied
- rảnh — free/available
- hơi bận — a little busy
- rất bận — very busy
- hôm nay — today
- sáng nay — this morning
- chiều nay — this afternoon
- tối nay — tonight
14. Vietnam in real life
Availability talk is social as well as grammatical. The same words can be used with coworkers, friends or relatives, but forms of address and how much explanation is appropriate depend on the relationship.
15. Common beginner mistakes
- Assuming bận must mean office work.
- Demanding a reason after someone simply says they are busy.
- Using bạn automatically with every person.
- Thinking every answer to có bận không? must be only có or không.
Try it
- Say that you are busy this morning.
- Say that you are free tonight.
- Ask an older male speaker whether he is busy this afternoon.
- Give a polite unavailable answer without explaining the reason.
Quick recap
