Một ngày bình thường — Reading a daily routine in context
Read one fictional ordinary day and integrate waking, work, meals, availability, đang, xong rồi and chưa without presenting the schedule as a universal Vietnamese lifestyle.
What you will learn
This is the Unit 9 reading and integration lesson. It uses B71–B77 together inside one small story.
The person and schedule are fictional. This is one ordinary day, not “the Vietnamese daily routine”.
1. Meet Hương
Hương is thirty-two years old. She lives in Đà Nẵng and works for a small travel company. Her parents live in another province, and she shares an apartment with her younger sister.
Today is Tuesday.
2. Buổi sáng
Hương thường dậy lúc sáu giờ. Hôm nay cô dậy lúc sáu giờ mười lăm. Cô uống nước, chuẩn bị đồ rồi ăn sáng.
Bảy giờ cô ăn sáng. Hôm nay cô ăn bánh mì và uống cà phê.
Khoảng bảy giờ rưỡi, Hương đi làm bằng xe máy. Chỗ làm cách nhà khoảng năm cây số.
3. At work
Tám giờ, Hương bắt đầu làm việc. Buổi sáng cô khá bận vì có nhiều việc cần giải quyết.
Lúc chín giờ, em gái nhắn:
“Chị đang làm gì?”
Hương trả lời:
“Chị đang làm việc. Sáng nay chị bận lắm.”
The text uses đang because the message focuses on the activity in progress at that moment.
4. Ăn trưa
Khoảng mười hai giờ, Hương đi ăn trưa với hai đồng nghiệp ở một quán gần công ty.
Một đồng nghiệp hỏi:
“Sáng nay làm xong chưa?”
Hương nói:
“Chưa xong. Chiều làm tiếp.”
This compact exchange works because both people already know what work they are talking about.
5. Buổi chiều
Buổi chiều Hương tiếp tục làm việc. Khoảng bốn giờ, cô hoàn thành việc quan trọng nhất.
Cô nhắn cho đồng nghiệp:
“Xong rồi.”
No full sentence is needed because the shared context supplies the missing subject and task.
6. Going home
Năm giờ rưỡi, Hương về nhà. Đường khá đông nên hôm nay cô đi mất khoảng ba mươi phút.
Khi Hương về đến nhà, em gái vẫn chưa về.
Hương gọi điện:
“Em về chưa?”
Em gái trả lời:
“Chưa. Em đang đi về.”
7. Buổi tối
Khoảng bảy giờ, hai chị em ăn tối ở nhà.
Sau bữa tối, em gái hỏi:
“Chị làm xong hết chưa?”
Hương cười:
“Việc hôm nay xong rồi. Tối nay chị rảnh.”
8. Routine and today are not identical
The story uses both:
- Hương thường dậy lúc sáu giờ. — routine
- Hôm nay cô dậy lúc sáu giờ mười lăm. — one day
A daily routine gives a pattern, not a rule that every day must follow exactly.
9. What đang contributes
In the story:
- Chị đang làm việc.
- Em đang đi về.
Both highlight activities in progress at the relevant conversational moment. Đang is not merely a mechanical translation of English “-ing”.
10. What xong rồi contributes
- Xong rồi.
- Việc hôm nay xong rồi.
The important point is that the work has reached a completed state relevant to the conversation.
11. What chưa contributes
- Chưa xong.
- Em về chưa?
- Chưa.
The expected point has not yet been reached. This is different from simply saying không.
12. Unit 9 language map
- B71: thức dậy / dậy + time
- B72: đi làm / đi học
- B73: ăn sáng / ăn trưa / ăn tối
- B74: bận / rảnh
- B75: đang + ongoing activity
- B76: xong / xong rồi
- B77: chưa + activity/state
13. Reading check
- Hương thường dậy lúc mấy giờ?
- Hôm nay cô dậy lúc mấy giờ?
- Cô đi làm bằng gì?
- Buổi sáng cô có bận không?
- Lúc chín giờ cô đang làm gì?
- Buổi trưa công việc đã xong chưa?
- Khi Hương về nhà, em gái đã về chưa?
- Tối nay Hương có rảnh không?
14. Culture and reality note
The story includes a motorbike commute, eating lunch near work and living with a sibling because these are plausible details, not because every Vietnamese adult lives this way.
Vietnam includes many routines: office work, factory shifts, farming, remote work, informal trade, school schedules, multigenerational households and people living alone. A useful language course uses concrete stories without turning them into stereotypes.
15. Read it again without translating every line
On the second reading, try to follow the sequence through time words and repeated daily-life vocabulary. You do not need to translate every Vietnamese word into English before understanding what happens.
Quick recap
Unit 9 shows how Vietnamese daily-life meaning comes from routines, time expressions, context and viewpoint words working together. Đang, rồi, chưa are useful because they show how an event is viewed—not because Vietnamese verbs need English-style tense endings.
