... ở đâu? — Asking where something is
Use ở đâu to ask where people, places and objects are, with everyday examples for restrooms, stations, addresses and meeting someone.
What you will learn
Ở đâu? is one of the most useful Vietnamese question patterns. You can use it for places, objects and people, but the meaning of ở shifts slightly with context.
1. The core pattern
X ở đâu? — Where is X?
- Nhà vệ sinh ở đâu? — Where is the restroom?
- Ga tàu ở đâu? — Where is the train station?
- Khách sạn ở đâu? — Where is the hotel?
2. Ask where a person is
- Bạn ở đâu? — Where are you?
- Anh đang ở đâu? — Where are you now?, to anh
- Chị Lan ở đâu? — Where is Lan?
The word đang can emphasize an action/state in progress or current situation.
3. Ask where someone lives
Bạn ở đâu? can also mean “Where do you live/stay?” depending on context. If you need to be clearer, say:
Bạn sống ở đâu? — Where do you live?
4. A short conversation
Khách: Chị ơi, nhà vệ sinh ở đâu ạ?
Nhân viên: Ở bên kia, gần cầu thang.
Khách: Em đi thẳng phải không chị?
Nhân viên: Đúng rồi. Đi thẳng rồi rẽ trái.
Khách: Dạ, em cảm ơn chị.
5. Useful location words
- ở đâu — where
- ở đây — here
- ở đó — there
- ở bên kia — over there / on the other side
- gần — near
- xa — far
- cầu thang — stairs
- nhà vệ sinh — restroom/toilet
- ga — station
- khách sạn — hotel
6. The many jobs of ở
Beginners often want one English translation for ở. It can be associated with being at a place, living/staying somewhere, or forming location expressions. Learn it through patterns rather than forcing a single translation.
7. Vietnam in real life
In small shops, homes or local eateries, directions may rely heavily on shared visual context: ở kia, bên này, phía sau. Watch gestures and surroundings as well as words.
8. Common beginner mistake
Bạn ở đâu? is context-dependent. It can ask someone’s current location or where they live/stay. If the distinction matters, add more information: Bây giờ bạn đang ở đâu? or Bạn sống ở đâu?
Try it
- Ask where the restroom is.
- Ask a friend where they are now.
- Say “It is over there, near the stairs.”
- Ask “Where do you live?” using sống.
Quick recap
Use X ở đâu? as your core location question. Then add context words such as đang, sống, ở đây, ở đó, gần to make the meaning clearer.
