Bao lâu? Bao xa? — Duration and distance are different questions
Separate duration from distance, ask mất bao lâu and bao xa, give approximate minutes/hours/meters/kilometers, and connect estimates to transport and traffic.
What you will learn
Bao lâu? asks about duration. Bao xa? asks about distance. They often appear in the same travel conversation, but they do not ask the same thing.
1. Bao lâu? — how long?
- Đi mất bao lâu? — How long does the trip take?
- Từ đây đến sân bay mất bao lâu?
- Đi xe máy khoảng hai mươi phút.
Mất here expresses the amount of time a trip/activity takes.
2. Bao xa? — how far?
- Từ đây đến chợ bao xa?
- Khoảng hai ki-lô-mét.
- Không xa lắm.
Bao xa asks distance, not travel time.
3. Relative vs estimated
B64 taught relative judgments:
- gần
- xa
- không xa lắm
B69 adds estimates:
- khoảng 500 mét
- khoảng 3 ki-lô-mét
- khoảng 15 phút
4. Khoảng — approximately/about
- Khoảng mười phút.
- Khoảng nửa giờ.
- Khoảng hai cây số.
Real travel estimates are often approximate. Khoảng is therefore extremely useful.
5. Minutes and hours
- mười phút — ten minutes
- hai mươi phút — twenty minutes
- nửa giờ — half an hour
- một giờ — one hour
This reuses number and time knowledge from Unit 3 instead of creating a new time system.
6. Meters and kilometers
- 100 mét
- 500 mét
- 2 ki-lô-mét
You may also hear cây số as an everyday way to refer to kilometers:
- Khoảng hai cây số.
Recognize both. Exact preference can vary by speaker and setting.
7. Same distance, different duration
Imagine a destination 5 km away:
- by motorbike it may take one amount of time;
- by car in heavy traffic it may take another;
- walking would take much longer.
Distance does not automatically determine duration.
8. Traffic changes the answer
- Nếu không kẹt xe, khoảng hai mươi phút.
- Giờ này đông xe, chắc lâu hơn.
You only need to recognize the idea here. Later lessons can teach conditional patterns more systematically. For now, focus on the estimate itself.
9. A short conversation
Khách: Từ đây đến bảo tàng bao xa?
Người địa phương: Khoảng ba cây số.
Khách: Đi taxi mất bao lâu?
Người địa phương: Khoảng mười lăm phút. Giờ đông xe có thể lâu hơn.
Khách: Đi bộ được không?
Người địa phương: Được, nhưng khá xa.
10. Bao lâu in other contexts
Bao lâu is not limited to travel:
- Anh ở Việt Nam bao lâu rồi?
- Học tiếng Việt bao lâu rồi?
This lesson focuses on travel duration, but the core idea is duration over time.
11. Do not convert mechanically
If someone says gần, do not assume an exact number. If someone says 10 phút, do not infer an exact distance without knowing the transport and conditions.
12. Useful vocabulary
- bao lâu — how long
- bao xa — how far
- mất bao lâu — how long it takes
- khoảng — approximately/about
- phút — minute
- giờ — hour
- mét — meter
- ki-lô-mét — kilometer
- cây số — kilometer, common conversational expression
- kẹt xe — traffic jam/congestion
13. Vietnam in real life
Travel-time answers are often estimates. Traffic, time of day, road type, weather and vehicle can all change the result. A useful learner listens for both the number and the conditions around that number.
14. Common beginner mistakes
- Using bao lâu when asking for kilometers.
- Using bao xa when asking for minutes.
- Treating gần/xa as fixed mathematical categories.
- Assuming one distance always produces one travel time.
Try it
- Ask how far a station is.
- Answer “about two kilometers.”
- Ask how long it takes by motorbike.
- Answer “about fifteen minutes.”
- Explain why two people can give different travel-time estimates for the same route.
Quick recap
Bao lâu asks duration; bao xa asks distance. Use khoảng for realistic estimates, and remember that transport and traffic connect the two without making them identical.
